Alexander Wang’s First Small Leather Goods

Alexander Wang’s First Small Leather Goods

Hot on the heels of his CFDA Award for Accessory Designer of the Year, Alexander Wang has more accessory news to share: For Fall, he’s debuting wallets and small leather goods. That doesn’t mean you have to wait until July to get your hands on them. Next Friday, June 17, the designer will offer the first of the new category of accessories—the Zelmira wallet in ponyskin ($525), the Mini Adriel bag in ostrich ($275), the Compact Quillon in metallic ($235), and the Prisma biker purse in printed ostrich ($295)—exclusively on eBay’s Fashion Vault. For 24 hours, shoppers will be able to buy (not bid on; the pieces will be sold under eBay’s “Buy It Now” option) wallets and mini-bags direct from the Fall runway that won’t be available anywhere else.

Designing small leather goods, Wang tells Style.com, is no different from their bigger sisters. “It’s always the same approach,” the designer says. “How do we create without overdesigning? There’s always a sense of masculinity and irreverence we look to, but also an ease of usage.” How, then, to carry these small pieces? In some cases, as a clutch instead of a larger bag. “Less is more,” Wang advises. “Ditch all the makeup and keep it to the essentials—keys, money, and phone. It’s a lot sexier when a girl isn’t carrying around a bag full of tricks.”

dolce gabbana oversized nautical tote

dolce gabbana oversized nautical tote

“Nautical” isn’t something you’d expect from Dolce & Gabbana, but hey, they have boats in Italy, right? Hence this D&G Dolce & Gabbana Oversized Nautical Tote. While the purse lacks the oomph that other D&G handbags have, it’s still pretty fetching, if a bit simple. Black and cream patent leather is sexy but still classic-looking, while the rope drawstring top hammers in the nautical effect. Take it boating or take it to lunch.

Fashion Week Handbags: Louis Vuitton Fall 2011

It’s been a full month since all of the fashion week festivities started, and they’ve finally come to an end. Showing at the very end of the cycle can either be a blessing or a curse; if what you’ve put together is merely mediocre (or worse, if it’s flat-out bad), critics and buyers are more likely to look harshly on it because of our fatigue at four weeks worth of clothes and accessories. If the collection you’re presenting is as good as beautifully fetishistic Louis Vuitton Fall 2011, though, then you get the glorious distinction of closing out the season on a high note and having your clothes by foremost in the minds of editors.
Vuitton is not a handbag company that I normally look to for my own purchases because of my personal preference toward bags without logos, but its fall accessory offerings were easily some of the best of the entire season. The central idea of the handbag collection was a theme and variations starring the brand’s ever-popular Lockit shape, much like the Speedy iterations that we saw from Vuitton for Fall 2010. It’s an idea that worked well then and works well now, with the disciplined lines of the Lockit lending themselves seamlessly to the upscale kink of the Vuitton ready-to-wear. Let’s not talk about the fuzzy bags and pretend those never happened, ok? Everything else was too good of a distraction.
